Leveling Up

When your character earns a promotion to the next level, it’s time to level up. When you level up, you’ll perform the following steps in any order:

  • Choose a class you qualify for. Gain a level in that class and all the benefits that come with it, such as new Training and Class Perk unlocks/upgrades.
  • Choose an ability you qualify for. This can include ability options granted by your class or non-class abilities available to you.
  • Gain a skill point. You can spend this skill point now, or save it to spend later.
  • Increase your bonuses to your Defenses, your Vigor, and your other Core Stats as listed on the table below.

Remember that you can perform these steps in the order that is most beneficial to you, especially for purposes of qualifying for new classes. For example, if you’d like to qualify for a specific class that requires an ability, and that ability requires a certain Core Stat value, you can increase your Core Stat first, then acquire the ability, then pick your class. The order that you apply your level bonuses and acquire your abilities is entirely up to you.

There are many options related to leveling up that your party and Dragonmaster can decide on before starting a game. Check out the Optional Rules section for details and pick the options that work best for your group. (NOT YET IMPLEMENTED)

Level Bonuses

Characters gain passive benefits and boosts as they level up, regardless of their chosen classes, according to the following table. In addition to the following benefits, you’ll gain an ability from your chosen class every level. The bonuses below are tied to your overall character level, not your current class level.

Each time you level up, you’ll choose an Ability you have access to. You gain access to the Abilities available at your current and previous class levels and to any other Abilities you qualify for that aren’t tied to class levels.

You also gain a Skill Point each time you level up. Unlike Abilities, you need not select Skills immediately when you gain a Skill Point. You can spend Skill Points on Skills during downtime or in camp. You can gain Skill Points through methods other than leveling up, such as by raising your Intelligence or as very rare rewards. Skills are used for exploration and social interactions as opposed to abilities, which primarily focus on battle.

At certain levels, you’ll gain the ability to increase your Core Stats. You gain +1 to your Vigor every third character level, and at every odd character level you’ll be able to increase one or two of your other Core Stats: Strength, Agility, Intelligence, or Will.

At character levels 2, 6, 10, and 14, you’ll gain a +1 bonus to all of your Defenses: Body, Mind, and Grit. These special rolls are used to avoid certain status effects and reduce the amount of damage and the number of wounds inflicted on you during battle.

NOTE: CURRENT TESTING PHASE

Ignore the Dragonpact column for now — Dragonpacts and Fate Breakers aren’t currently implemented, but they’re tied very closely to each other. For the current phase of the game, we’re maxing out character levels at 3. This will change once the fundamentals of the game are set in stone.
